SWEET
BOY OF COMEDY
I can remember Richard as a youngster growing up in Mitcham.
His appearance was allot different then, sporting large spectacles on
a wiry framed body. Even then he had fame at his fingertips though.
You see his uncle was the famous Junior who was riding high in the charts
with the very catchy early 80's song, Mother used to say.
Richards
high profile career started in less auspicious surroundings with a
one-off gig at a London comedy club. Perhaps his chosen profession comes
as no surprise seeing as his step-sister is super model Naomi
Campbell. His dad used to be married to her mother Valerie.
As a university graduate, Blackwood knew that he wanted to be a performer
and
plugged away doing guest spots on late night black entertainment programmes.
His dedication and hard work paid off and he was signed up by MTV where
for the past two years he had presented its video request show, also
co presenting on Singled out. To where he would coin the phrase "you
gotta go, you gotta go", towards the teenage contestants who were
voted off.
His terrestrial big break came soon after and he was eventually given
his
own show on Channel 4 The Richard Blackwood Show, an achievement he
is
rightly proud of. He says "There are only four black people who
have been given their own
[self-titled] show - me, Trevor McDonald, Lenny Henry and Ian Wright."
A pop career then beckoned and his first release Mama Who Da Man rocketed
to number two in the charts. The annoyingly catchy 1,2,3,4 Get with
the Wicked repeated this success. Richard also stood in for Chris Moyles
as a Radio 1 presenter.
With so many things under his belt, Richard would like to break into
Hollywood and become as recognized as with Will Smith, Eddie Murphy
and Chris Rock.
Today
Richard is still working just as hard as ever. He recently appeared
in the late night reality tv show The Club alongside Dean Gaffney and
Samantha Fox and has also appeared in Celebrity Detox. He writes his
weekly lifestyle article for the The Voice newspaper and has appeared
in Casualty.
Whatever happens in the next year, I am sure Richard will be
on our screens.
