Heavyweight
Champion of the World
For the first time in more than a century, a British fighter had won the
(undisputed) heavyweight championship of the world. On November 13, 1999,
in Las Vegas, NV, WBC heavyweight champion and linear heavyweight champion
Lennox Lewis tattooed WBA/IBF heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield for
12 rounds to earn a unanimous decision victory and to capture the undisputed
heavyweight championship of the world.
Lennox
Lewis has been at the forefront of Heavyweight boxing for the past eight
years. He is also the first and only British born boxer to become undisputed
World Heavyweight Champion of the world when he defeated Evander Holyfield
in November 1999. Being part of a small group of Heavyweights to retain
the title three times, EvanderHolyfield and the great Muhammad Ali.
Born in the tough East End in London, September 2nd 1965, Lennox had a
traumatic childhood and immigrated at the age of 12 to Canada. Whilst
in Canada Lennox lived with his Mother Violet and discovered the art of
boxing and excelled under his first coach Arnie Boehm who guided him to
a brilliant amateur record of 85 wins, 52 knock outs and an Olympic Gold
medal title. After successfully winning the Olympic Heavyweight title
in 1988 Lennox decided to return to the United Kingdom and begin his reign
for boxing stardom.
|
He
had his first professional fight in 1989 and by 1990 Lennox went onto
win the European title by defeating Jean Chanet in 1990, and followed
that by winning the British, Commonwealth by defeating Derek Williams
in 1992.
Lennox was officially crowned Heavyweight champion of the world in 1993
when his arch rival Riddick Bowe refused to defend his title against
him. Lennox defended his title successfully against the likes of Tony
Tucker, Phil Jackson and Frank Bruno. However in September 1994, Lennox
lost his WBC title when he was unexpectedly knocked out by Oliver McCall.
Unperturbed from such a dramatic loss Lennox became the first British
boxer to regain his heavyweight title when he defeated Oliver McCall
in the rematch, February 7, 1997. For the next couple of years Lennox
defended his title successfully against dangerous opponents Andrew Golota,
Tommy Morrison, David Tua, and Frans Botha. Lennox lost his title again
in a controversial decision against Evander Holyfield. Less than six
month’s later Lennox was able to avenge that defeat and defeated
Evander Holyfield to become the undisputed the first and only British
boxer to become undisputed heavyweight champion wining the WBC, WBA,
IBF.
Lennox second reign of heavyweight champion of the world was not to
last very long as he was surprisingly knocked out in the fifth round
of his title defence against Hasim Rahman. That defeat was later avenged,
when Lennox knocked out Hasim Rahman in devastating fashion in the fourth
round to retain his title.
Lennox is no longer undisputed heavyweight champion of the world though
he has defeated the most dangerous opponents in the division Mike Tyson,
Vitali Klitschko.
Lennox has been a true gentlemen outside of boxing and has been a positive
role model to all members of the black Community and to Boxing. Since
he has been totally dedicated to his sport and has given a lot of money
to charities and he runs his own college in London. The year 2004 will
probably be Lennox’s last year in boxing, where either a big money
fight against Roy Jones Junior or Vitali Klitschko may well be his last
fight.
Lennox announces his retirement from the ring on the 6th of February
2004.
Iam sure it won't be the end of the world for Lennox he may pursue a career
in acting or as a boxing promoter.
