CHRIS
EUBANKS Boxer
Chris
Eubanks has progressed into being one of the most controversial boxers
in boxing History. He will be best remembered for his epic fights with
Nigel Benn and Michael Watson. Chris was an extremely arrogant showman
in and outside of the ring. His dress sense and his extreme arrogance
and posturing in the ring gave him the unprecedented title as one of
the most hated Boxers in the UK. One of his most controversial comments
was to describe boxing as a mugs game.
Born in Dulwich, August 1966 to Jamaican immigrants. Chris had a difficult
childhood and was a young tearaway. In one year he was expelled 18 times
from school. He was even placed in a social institution though his problems
with the state continued. It was not until his parents separated that
he was to find a purpose in life. At the age of 16 he emigrated to New
York, USA with his father and he discovered the art of boxing.
Chris had a brilliant amateur career where he went on to win the Spanish
Golden Gloves Championship. He turned professional in October 3rd 1985
and had four successful wins at Atlantic City. Chris returned to the
UK to pursue his boxing career. In 1990 he won his first world title
defeating Nigel Ben in ten thrilling rounds for the WBO World title.
Chris managed to defend his title a further 19 times an amazing achievement.
His other great performance was defeating Michael Watson on September
21st 1991 at White Hart Lane. Chris managed to get off the canvas in
the eleventh round to stop Watson in the twelfth. This sadly finished
Michael Watson’s career and he was never able to box again.
After beating Watson Chris managed to successfully defend his title
but It was not until the mid 90’s that Chris received respect
in the ring from the pubic in defeats to Joe Calzaghe (for the WBO Super
Middleweight title) and Carl Thompson (for the WBO Cruiserweight title).
Chris fought bravely in both fights though took a tremendous beating.
After Chris fought the Celtic warrior Steve Collins (in the mid 90’s)
where he was clearly beaten he has never boxed since.
Chris had a successful boxing career where he had only five defeats
and 19 World Championship victories.
Outside boxing Chris has managed to win many accolades, which include
Best Dressed man in 1991 and 1993 (given by the Mens Wear Association
of Great Britain) and the Tiepin award at the end of 1998. He also won
the Best Dressed Sportsman Award twice (from the Express) in 1993 and
1995.
Chris spends the rest of his time still in the media spotlight. He recently
had a show “At Home with the Eubanks” which was filmed on
Channel 5. Chris is married to Karron Suzanne (pronounced car-ron) and
has four children. He has also lectured at numerous Universities, Secondary
Schools and infant Schools, such as Eton, Oxford University and others.
From a difficult childhood and sheer determination Chris has become
one of the most successful World Middleweight Champions ever produced
in the UK. He has been an inspiration to the black Community through
his determination at being the best at his sport. Although his critics
would describe Chris Eubanks as a Blackman who has identity issues.
Some say he is very eccentric and that he maybe misunderstood by others.
However it cannot be denied that he was very successful at his sport.
