FRANK
BRUNO Boxer
Best
remembered for his knockout victories, and great sense of humour.
Born on the 16th of November in 1961 at Hammersmith Hospital in London.
He was the youngest of six children from the union of Lynette &
Robert Bruno.
Frank had a turbulent childhood living in poverty,
and getting into trouble at school. However he was a keen athlete who
excelled in Football, Athletics and Boxing.
His prestigious boxing career began at age 9, at the local Wandsworth
Boys Club. During his amateur career he amassed a good record of 20
wins and 1 defeat. He also became the youngest ABA Heavyweight Champion
at 18.
As a professional fighter Frank amassed a record of 40 wins, 4 defeats
losing to Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, James “Bonecrusher “Smith
and Tim Witherspoon.
His greatest achievement was winning the WBC title defeating Oliver
McCall on the 3rd of September 1995. However he disappointingly lost
the title in his first defence in three one sided rounds against Mike
Tyson.
He retired from boxing in 1996 after winning the Commonwealth, European
and World title.
Frank was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990. However Frank
has found it difficult adjusting to a life without Boxing. He has recently
had a mental breakdown and is still pursuing a career in Entertainment.
He is divorced from ex-wife Laura and three children Rachel, Nicola
and Franklyn.
Frank has been a role model to the Black Community. His determination
and discipline to be the best at his sport has played a positive image
in showing Black people that they can be successful.
