Sancho was born on a slave ship and came to England at the age of two.
he was sold to three maiden sisters in Greenwich. The sisters did not
believe in educating him because he would not be so servile to them.
He wrote that the family "judged that ignorance was the best security
for obedience." Sancho decided to teach himself to read and write
when not serving. He became the first African writer to be published
in England with a best seller. sancho also excelled in music and became
a minor composer. Other than his talents, Sancho was very concerned
with slavery and pleaded for the well-being of his people at the forceful
hands of the English.
Sancho
died at the age of 51 in 1780. Leaving six children and a wife. His
letters were collected and published as, The Letters of The Late Ignatious
Sancho, by his correspondent a Miss Crewe. This was another best seller
for Sancho which lead to five editions being published.
