Samuel
Coleridge Taylor is today almost completely forgotten. However,
he was, at the turn of the Century one of Britain's most outstanding
Composers.
Arthur
Wharton was the world's first Black professional footballer and
100 yards world record holder. He was also one of the first black
people to play professional cricket in the Yorkshire and Lancashire
leagues.
Mary
Seacole was one of two famous women who nursed the sick and wounded
at Crimea. The other was Florence Nightingale who was celebrated
for her work and is renowned to this day.
Olaudah
Equiano, called Gustavus Vassa by his white masters, became a legend
through his words. In 1788 England published his autobiographical
work, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano,
or Gustavus Vassa, the African.
